“Say No to Dowry” Campaign

"I promise never to give or take dowry."

A "Say No to Dowry" campaign was launched at the 2002 Annual Conference of the Association for India's Development (AID) in San Francisco on May 25, 2002.

Over 200 Indians, both students and professionals, have signed a dowry pledge which decrees, "I promise never to give or take dowry." This is a significant move because Non Resident Indian grooms command the highest dowries in India.

As a first step, the anti-dowry campaign aims to reach out to Non Resident Indians in the U.S. to endorse the dowry pledge. Well known photo-journalist/columnist P. Sainath and noted activists Aruna Roy and Shankar Singh, who were present at the AID conference, strongly supported and stressed the importance of the campaign.

What you can do ?

Include the ‘No to dowry’ pledge and/or the ‘Anti-dowry’ logo in your wedding and reception invitations. Both logos can be downloaded from the AID-India website: http://www.aidindia.org/nodowry/index.shtml
