Dear Mr President
Every issue will carry answers to questions posed to world leaders - answers that these leaders might have given if it were not for diplomatese, double speak and other such trivial hurdles that accompany such positions of power.
Dear Prime Minister Vajpayee
What is it about India's past that you are most proud about?
Adivasi
Dear Vanvasi
I am proud of the fact that Indian civilization was not given to expansionist ideals and did not attack oppress another culture.
Dear Prime Minister Vajpayee
Why is there still so much poverty despite significant growth in economic and technological sectors?
Interested In Technology
Dear IIT
India should be a strong nation - and we will take every step to take her there. Obviously, in the process, some people will have to sacrifice their lives and some people will be oppressed but we have to accept these costs for the birth of a strong nation.
Dear Prime Minister Vajpayee
How is your health?
Desiring your Resignation
Dear DR
Why do you folks always keep asking about my health? I know my knees are in a really bad state and I am tired all the time. I need twelve hours of sleep every day. But if you keep portraying me thus, it will affect the strength of our nation. A strong nation needs a strong leader - like me.
Dear Prime Minister Vajpayee
What is the role of Indian culture, its traditional knowledge and its past in building the future?
Marching for Traditional Values
Dear MTV
India's past is its bedrock. We were a highly civilized people - we have discovered so many aspects that modern science is discovering only now. We had technologies in textile industry, in food processing, in agriculture, and in many other areas long before the west. We must build our future through the use of such knowledge.
Dear Prime Minister Vajpayee
How do you ensure that trade and technology strengthen India's future? (reword)
Buddha Smiling
Dear BS
We have made sure that foreign technology is accessible to our scientists. We have liberalized our markets so that foreign companies can come and make beverages, sell fast food, good quality shoes, garments and clothes. We have laid the groundwork for an India that can potentially wear and eat the same things that the Americans eat - we will be a developed nation soon.
Dear Prime Minister Vajpayee
Why has India decided to quickly pay back aid from various countries?
Impressed Multinational Financier
Dear IMF
Countries use aid as a way to control us. They want to interfere with our internal matters by leveraging the aid they give us. It was the basis of colonial expansion and even now it is the lever of modern day imperialism. We realize this and now try our best to get out of such a situation.
Dear Prime Minister Vajpayee
Why has India started a fund to give aid to other countries?
Worried Banker
Dear WB
Clearly, we are now doing well and we think we should help other countries that are not so fortunate. Besides, we would like to increase our role in global politics by being able to influence the future directions of these small nations. In fact, if we are successful, I am sure we can become a permanent member of the UN Security Council. And then, we can really twist arms and show our might.
Dear Prime Minister Vajpayee
Why is it that your government favored the deal with Enron after it came to power despite the fact that your party had opposed the deal before elections?
Notice By Accident
Dear NBA
It was only after we came to power that Enron was able to present us with various facts that convinced us that they should receive the contract. The presentation they made was just unprecedented.
Dear Prime Minister Vajpayee
Where does Kashmir figure in all this? Should we use force to resolve the issue? Does the opinion of Kashmiris matter?
Children of Kashmir
Dear COK
Wow! Is the Dal Lake not pretty?
Dear Prime Minister Vajpayee
What are your views on global environmental issues and India's role in it?
Friends of Earth
Dear FOE
Environment is really a public relations effort by nations that can afford to or need to.
Dear Prime Minister Vajpayee
What is your plan vis-à-vis Pakistan?
Individual Seeking Information
Dear ISI
I would really like to make friends with Pakistan - I tried even when I was a minister in the 1970s. But now I am ticked off with Pakistan. First, I tried the Lahore bus trip. While Nawaz Sharif was a great host, the powers that be of Pakistan, the military, largely ignored me. And then they started Kargil. So when they came to Agra, led by Musharraf, I did exactly that - was a great host but scuttled their efforts. Musharraf even tried the handshake thing - the sneaky fellow. But now I have offered my hand first. I hope they accept it so that I can become the great statesman that brought peace to South Asia. I might even be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. The only issue might be that I have to share it with some Pakistani general - but I will see if there is a way around it.
