FDI in Nepalese Media

Passionate debates continue in Nepal on the issue of Foreign Direct Investment in local media. The majority of the people, including media persons themselves, are staunchly against foreign direct investment in Nepal's media sector. However, many are also against monopoly of one organization in this sector.
The Himalayan Times in English and Annapurna Post in Nepali are being published by APCA, a wholly Indian owned company. Many Indians are also employed in these publications.
Recently, the Nepal Media Society organized a meeting where representatives from a cross section of Nepalese media, lambasted foreign investment and the publication of the two newspapers. Similarly, the media persons are also against the Nepal 1 TV channel, which is India owned and operates from New Delhi. Students had burnt copies of The Himalayan Times and Annapurna Post earlier in protest against FDI in Nepalese media.
At the same time, people are also not happy with the Kantipur Publications, which has tried to monopolize the Nepalese media by capturing print, radio and TV sectors. The publication had committed some irregularities in getting the permit to run all the three media.
