Pepsi & Coke Facing Ban, Consumer Boycott
It seems like Coke was dealt a double whammy. A government committee in Maharashtra and the Green Party in the USA are recommending banning Coke and Pepsi products. The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is understood to have recommended a ban on sale of soft drinks in schools in the state citing a scientific study on presence of pesticides in them. On the other hand, the Green Party in the USA has proposed a resolution banning Coke (and Pepsi) products from its events and meetings. Sify News reported that the Maharashtra state government, however, has yet to act on the recommendation. An official from the School Education department said that the FDA had cited the findings of the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) study and the findings of the JPC committee and said: "There was strong proof that there were residues of insecticides in these soft drinks." Meanwhile, the Green Party in the US is proposing a resolution banning Pepsi and Coke products from its events and meetings and recommending that its members stop consuming these products. Its resolution states that BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Green Party recommends to all its affiliates that they not serve or sell Coca-Cola or Pepsi products at their offices or at their meetings; BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Green Party recommends that no Coca-Cola or Pepsi products be served or sold at venues for Green Party meetings, conferences and conventions. BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that the Green Party recommends that no Green Party member or anyone else committed to the Ten Key Values purchase or consume Coca-Cola or Pepsi products. While the Green Party does not have the following that the two major parties do, such a resolution will certainly increase visibility of the unethical behavior of both these companies in the communities in which they exist.
