Communal Violence in Orissa
Community leaders from Uttar Pradesh write to the National Human Rights Commission to act against the recent violence against Christians in Orissa and are asking citizens and community groups from around India to join in. Related Links Community leaders from Uttar Pradesh have expressed their concern about the recent spate of violence against Christians in Orissa. In a letter in Hindi , addressed to the chairperson of the Hantional Human Rights Commission, they write the recent attacks can be termed nothing but communal fascism.
Such attacks are not only counter to the cultural ethos of Orissa, they are also against the constitution of India. Such attacks not only make minority communities vulnerable, they also place at risk spaces of open debate and discussion. They urge the NHRC to act to stop any more violence on these lines and use its influence with the central and state governments to bring the culprits to book. The Government of Orissa has to look after all its citizens specially the minorities. Attacks on minorities must be stopped, the miscreants punished and those who suffered damages in the attacks must be compensated.
