In the wake of the Nithari incident, Indian Express reported that social organisations have decided to take out marches and processions in the most sensitive districts and then end them at New Delhi to bring the issue of stringent rules on child safety before the rule makers.

The first march in this series is being taken out by Guria, an organisation in Varanasi district of UP, working for the welfare of women in prostitution and also, rescuing girls from entering this ditch. Guria will start off this march from Varanasi on February 20 and conclude it at Nithari village in district Gautam Buddh Nagar on March 19. During the 28-days-yatra, the social activists will cover districts like Varanasi, Jaunpur, Sultanpur, Barabanki, Lucknow, Hardoi, Shahjahanpur, Badaun, Bulandshahr, Noida and Gautam Buddh Nagar.

Said Ajeet Singh of Guria, “The march is being organised as a measure of peace and solidarity towards the families of the Nithari victims. Also, we want to bring to the notice of the people and the government, be it the state or national, that the cases of trafficking and crime against children are on an increase. We will have around 20 such families from various districts like Varanasi, Mau, Ghazipur, Azamgarh and Jaunpur whose children have gone missing and they have not got justice. They will be carrying photographs of their children.”

Ironically, in October 2005, after Guria had raided a red-light neighborhood in Varanasi to rescue 31 women, 17 of them under age, the local administration had charged the organization of assault and issued warrants against them while those engaged in trafficking of these women were let free.

Singh added, “We will also raise questions as to why there have been criminal cases against us when we rescued 49 girls from the brothels of Varanasi and why the state government let go off the traffickers by releasing them on bail in Varanasi.”

The second march is being taken out by around 100 social organisations from UP, Nepal and Bangladesh under the banner of ‘Bachpan Bachao Aandolan’. Titled ‘Bal Vyapar Virodhi Yatra’, the march covers several states in India including UP, Uttaranchal, West Bengal, Bihar and New Delhi, apart from Nepal, where maximum girls come from.
