RTI Camps in Kampur Continue
Continued awareness efforts and Right to Information Camps in Kanpur have helped increase citizen awareness of government roles and have helped increase accountability of government officials. Related Links A detailed report in Hindi can be downloaded here. These camps have focused on collecting anecdotes and data of success and hurdles of RTI as well as increasing awareness about the 'how to' among citizens. The latest episode of RTI campaign was through RTI camps in Kanpur city on December 7th. The camps started with the SSP office - while the office has a desk for the Information Officer, no such officer has been available. The campaign then complained at the State RTI office - the PIO there promising that information at the SSP office would be made available. The RTI office in Kanpur was a hub of activity with various people submitting applications and requesting specific information. One individual at the office was Mr. Ravikant who had not received pension for over 5 years but had now won the lost pension through RTI. Many other government offices were in the same status as the SSP office - a board for the PIO was prominently displayed by the officer in question was missing. This mobile camp was effective in exposing numerous communities to the local resources they had available.
