Today, the Kisan Swaraj Yatra reached Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore, a seat of research collaboration with Monsanto for genetically modified seeds. Farmers from Coimbatore and across India protested by donating money to the University – urging them to take up research for the farmers' benefit and not just for the agribusiness corporations that are appropriating farmers' seed varieties.

As the Yatra has traveled through Gujarat, M.P., Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka and T.N., the overwhelming message from farmers and non-farmers, rural and urban areas, is that such a large mobilization to save Indian agriculture is the crying need today. The Yatra is raising issues like support systems for farmers, remunerative prices, control over seeds, land and other resources, forced displacement and the vicious cycle of high-cost chemical agriculture. The Yatra has had Ministers in M.P. and Karnataka endorsing the demands, farmers taking out bullock-cart rallies, promising resolutely to be annadatas in the face of adversity and land-grabbing, adivasi children laying out their vision of sustainable development, film personalities coming out in support, shopkeepers and transport officials donating money to keep the Yatra going, and good coverage in the media.

The farmers need your voice today. It is time to send the message loud and clear to the Indian government.

The Kisan Swaraj Yatra is an initiative to strike out a new path in agriculture, which provides a dignified livelihood to all our farmers and farmworkers, and keeps our soil alive and our food and water healthy. From Sabarmati Ashram in Gujarat on Oct 2nd, the bus Yatra is traveling through 20 states to reach Raj Ghat on Dec 11th. Through cities, towns and villages, lakhs of farmers, agricultural workers, social activists, farmer leaders, students and consumers are mobilizing to bring these issues to the government.

Food, Farmers, Freedom!
