The South Asian is a forum for the people of South Asia - those living in South Asia as well as South Asians living in various parts of the world.
As a part of the world with its unique histories of colonization, and of development, we share religions, cultures, languages, and aspirations. And yet, we have been at each other, within our nations and between nations.
In all of these pulls and stresses there are many who have 'made it' and yet there are many you are marginalized beyond imagination. The South Asian is an attempt to provide an audience to the voices of the marginalized, a forum that makes public their concerns, their dreams and their pain.
The South Asian has attempted to provide voices to communities that policy makers and the popular media has ignored tribals being displaced, enslaved bonded laborers, fisher folk oppressed by state bureaucracy, religiously oppressed.
It is also a forum for dreamers, for those hoping for less violence, more justice, greater peace and less marginalization, and for those working on these issues. It is a space for discussing policies, of plans and sharing events.
With improving telecommunications technology, it has become easier for us to make friends from across the world. This is especially important in areas where historical misunderstandings and creation of stereotypes have caused much violence. The South Asian is also an attempt to find ways to share our selves through these mechanisms. In this regard, we have facilitated increased interactions among children in India and Pakistan.
Our articles are not about correct English though readability is good. Nor are they about proven ideas. They are about ideas driven by ideals of love, of friendship, of peace, about events that affect lives of people in this region, and about participation of civic society in a non-violent fashion.
We have tried to ensure that these articles are not driven by hatred.
A small group of people run the magazine putting together articles and maintaining the site. A large number of our articles come from readers as well as groups and individuals working on various issues.
We welcome you to submit articles on any issue or your own creative writings or artwork as long as they do not have hateful or pornographic content.
The site started with a slightly different leaning, including many more people. Some articles portraying these perspectives are listed below.
