AID, Asha, Ashoka, Seva Foundation Win Four Star Ratings

Asha for Education, Ashoka and Association for India’s Development, Seva Foundation have all won four star ratings (the highest possible rating) in a review of American charity organizations by Charity Navigator.

Charity Navigator defines itself as an organization that “works to guide intelligent giving. We help charitable givers make intelligent giving decisions by providing information on over thirty-one hundred charities and by evaluating the financial health of each of these charities. We ensure our evaluations are widely used by making them easy to understand and freely available to the public. By guiding intelligent giving, we aim to advance a more efficient and responsive philanthropic marketplace, in which givers and the charities they support work in tandem to overcome our nation's most persistent challenges.”

Asha for Education received an overall rating of 69.82 out of a maximum of 70 points. Founded in 1991, Asha for Education is a secular organization dedicated to change in India by focusing on basic education in the belief that education is a critical requisite for socio-economic change. Today, there are over 66 Asha chapters worldwide: 45 in the US, 14 in India, and 7 in Europe, Singapore and Australia. The organization has more than 1000 active volunteers and several thousand supporters around the world. Till date, Asha has supported more than 385 different projects spanning 24 states in India. In terms of project funding, almost $4,000,000 has been disbursed to these projects since Asha's inception.

Its fund raising efficiency (defined as the amount spent to raise $1) was listed at $0.01 with 98.2% of the money it raises going to programs it has set itself up to deliver. Administrative expenses for Asha amount to 0.7%. In the last year, Asha for Education saw its primary revenue grow by 13.8% and its program expenses grow by 23.6%. Its total revenue is listed at $1,635,368 and total expenses at $1,193,762.

The Association for India’s Development received an overall rating of 69.52. AID is a voluntary non-profit organization committed to promoting sustainable, equitable and just development in India, by working with grassroots organizations and movements in India. AID supports and initiates efforts in various interconnected spheres such as education, livelihoods, natural resources, health, women's empowerment and social justice. Founded in 1991, AID has completed 365 projects covering 18 Indian states. Since its inception, AID has established 36 chapters in the United States, 4 chapters in India operated by 500 volunteers and supports over 100 ongoing projects.

Its fund raising efficiency was listed at $0.01 with 95.2% of the money it raises going to programs it has set itself up to deliver. Administrative expenses for AID amount to 3.8%. In the last year, AID saw its primary revenue grow by 15.1% and its program expenses grow by 29.9%. Its total revenue is listed at $448,374 and total expenses at $496,113.

Ashoka received an overall rating of 68.99. Founded in 1980, Ashoka develops the profession of social entrepreneurship around the world. Ashoka invests in people. It is a global non-profit organization that searches the world for social entrepreneurs, extraordinary individuals with unprecedented ideas for change in their communities. Ashoka identifies and invests in these social entrepreneurs when no one else will. It does so through stipends and professional services that allow "Ashoka Fellows" to focus full-time on their ideas for leading social change in education and youth development, health care, environment, human rights, access to technology, and economic development. Since 1982, Ashoka has invested in more than 1,400 Ashoka Fellows in 48 countries.

In the last year, Ashoka saw its primary revenue grow by 7.9% and its program expenses grow by 19.4%. Its total revenue is listed at $9,868,039 and total expenses at $12,860,494.

Seva Foundation received an overall rating of 60.38. Founded in 1978, Seva Foundation builds partnerships to respond to locally defined problems with culturally sustainable solutions. Our primary purpose is to restore sight and prevent blindness by supporting the transfer of technology, training and equipment to locally run programs in India, Nepal and Tibet. These programs become self-sustaining and provide affordable eye care to everyone. It is a vision that has us working with modern surgeons and traditional healers, sharing the technology for surgically implanted lenses and supporting herbal remedies used by Mayan midwives.

In the last year, Seva Foundation saw its primary revenue grow by 8.1% and its program expenses grow by 11.2%. Its total revenue is listed at $3,121,698 and total expenses at $3,296,908.
