Democracy Day in Nepal
Democracy Day in Nepal
In his message on the occasion of 54th National Democracy Day on February 19th, the King of Nepal, King Gyanendra called upon all "to unite for making multiparty democracy meaningful through people-oriented politics." Since his accession to the throne, the King has expressed his commitment for the multiparty democracy and constitutional monarchy. Leaders of agitating political parties have expressed disagreement with the King's latest advice of holding general elections at the earliest. They are seeking resumption of the parliament that was dissolved by him. Prime Minister Surya Bahadur said on the occasion that the government of Nepal was gearing up for holding general elections as early possible to pave way for an elected government. He also stressed the need for a broad political consensus and urged the Maoists to join the political mainstream by renouncing violence.
