NREGA Workshops in UP

Sirish Agarwal writes about the goals of the NREGA campaign in Sandila and Bharawan blocks of Hardoi district after conversation with Sandeep and Arundhati on Nov 24, 2006

1) People without job cards be given cards without delay.

2) In case no work is provided to eligible residents, applications will be filed by the residents and the work will have to be provided in 15 days as stipulated in the law.

3) If work has been performed by a resident but wages have not been paid because fake entries were made in the muster rolls then aim is to expose fake cases. In some instances in Hardoi the administration officers lured
residents to sign for receipt of Rs 500 in wages by giving them Rs 100 without having to perform any work. There are instances when the wages were paid for two days when the work was performed for 10 days or partial payment was made.

4) BDO has claimed that out of 110 panchayats in these two blocks work has been made available in 100 panchayats and in each of these regular payments to workers are being made, yet no muster rolls are available.

5) A flyer campaign will be launched as the continuing part of this campaign to make the residents aware of the provisions of the NREGA law.

Thanks,
Sirish Agarwal
