Water Levels Around Coke Plant Drop 30 feet

In a preliminary survey conducted by Swadesh Science Movement of India(Delhi) with in the Mehndiganj area where the Coca-Cola plant is based, the water level in the villages of Nagepur, Bhikaripur and Mehndiganj villages have decreased to 27, 43 and 32 feet respectively.

In the survey conducted on the lakes in the area, 78% of the lakes in this area have dried out. This region had 18 lakes out of which 14 have completely dried and 3 have less water than before and 1 is in the verge of drying out. These naturally formed lakes have been performing the water recharching and harvesting in this region. With no adequate rain in the region for the past four years, these lakes are drying out. Out of 180 lakes in Arajiline block the number of lakes that have dried have increased from 96(Source: Hindustan 08/06/2005) to 122(Source: Amar Ujala 08/05/2006) in just one year.

In two letters drafted to the Central Pollution Board and the State Pollution Control Board of Uttar Pradesh, the team has questioned the reasoning behind the license given to Coca-Cola plant when there is no adequate water for the people in the region. The team has also questioned the statement by Coca-Cola plant on rainwater harvesting when there are adequate natural lakes in the area and there has been no adequate rain in the region.

The team has requested the state pollution control board to take prompt action as per the notice from Central Pollution Control board on the basis of the excessive lead and cadmium contents found in the sludges generated by the plant. The team has called for stopping the water extraction by Coca-Cola plant in view of the continuing drought faced by the community.
