A large rally is being planned by villages around the Coke plant in Sinhachavar, Ballia on October 23rd, 2007. Earlier this year, local villagers found debris and hazardous waste from the plant dumped outside the plant site in community land. Local community groups have already filed a request with the pollution control board to analyze the extent of pollutants.

The plant continues to pump out over 500,000 liters of water every day even as the state as seen low rainfall and drought like conditions are being felt by local communities. Water level has fallen acoss the region and farmers are finding it difficult to access water.

The local government body representing villages from that region announced that they would begin protests against the operation of the company and have also recommended that the license of the plant to operate in the region be canceled. The rally planned for the 23rd and 24th October is led by these communities - villagers from neighboring areas have also expressed their willingness to join the effort.
