Independent People's Tribunal on WB

Over a hundred people from across the country will present testimony at the Independent People's Tribunal on the World Bank in India this month. From 21-24 September intellectuals, grassroots activists, and those willing to come forward to speak about the impact of World Bank projects and policies on their communities will convene at Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi.

A Tribunal of this nature on the World Bank will be the first of its kind in India. The Tribunal endeavours to investigate the effects of the Bank's policies, not only sectorally, but also nationally and institutionally. Key groups, individuals and organizations are playing the roles of presenters and advisors. Panelists include:

  • Professor Amit Bhaduri
  • Meher Engineer
  • Ramaswamy Iyer
  • Prabash Joshi
  • Abid Hassan Minto
  • Alejandro Nadal
  • Aruna Roy
  • Arundhati Roy
  • Justice P.B. Sawant
  • S.P. Shukla
  • Sulak Sivaraksa
  • Justice Suresh
  • Eric Toussaint
  • Justice Usha

The date of the tribunal has been set for 21-24 September 2007. The venue is Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.

The agenda is very full with over 50 organizations participating in what is sure to be a powerful set of assessments of the World Bank.   Please find the programme schedule attached. Many groups are planning additional events in the evening sessions including a Film festival as well as discussion groups with prominent activists and academics.  We will forward that schedule as soon as it becomes available.

As was mentioned last week, registration is open.

Attached is the registration form.  Please post or email it in as soon as possible.    You can download the form from this email, and save it to your computer.  Open the file, and fill in the form itself on your computer, and send it back to
secretariat@worldbanktribunal.org with the subject: REGISTRATION.  Alternatively, you can print it out and send it via post to the address on the form.

We are making arrangements and want to make sure we have enough space, meals, literature, water, etc. for everyone.

Please circulate this widely and looking forward to seeing you.

In solidarity,

World Bank Tribunal Secretariat
