More slaves freed in Sindh
Human rights groups have acted with the support of the local courts to ensure the freedom of 188 more individuals enslaved by brick kiln owners in Sindh. The courts, however, did not press any charges against the kiln owners. Related Links Green Rural Development Organization (GRDO), an organization working on the freedom of slaves in Sindh, filed 6 petitions through advocate Sharifan Ghanghro in the Court of District & Sessions judge Hyderabad for release of 194 brick workers, enslaved at different brick kilns in the jurisdiction of Tando Jam and Hoosri Police stations of sub district Hyderabad, of Hyderabad district of Sindh province of Pakistan.
These petitions were filed under section 491 of Cr PC on 31st October 2008. The honorable court, after hearing GRDO's council, passed order to station house officers both police stations to produce these individuals before the court on 3rd November 2008.
On 3rd November 43 detainees were produced before the court and were set free by honorable court to live with freedom. However no criminal case has been ordered against offenders.
Today on 4th November 2008, Hoosri Police produced 145 detainees before the court and court set them free. However one of the freed slave women Salkan alias Kari made a plea before the court that her husband Hakim continues to be in illegal confinement of Seth Hameed Khan (the kiln owner) for the last three months. Seth Hameed Khan Dilo, Gul, Bashir Khan Pathan and Paho Oad took him away forcibly three months ago and since then he is missing. She said that this was well known to all those who were enslaved with her at the same kiln. She pleaded with the court for to kindly pass orders for production of her husband before the court and the arrest of the culprits as per law.
In addition, six persons enslaved at the brick kiln are ordered by court to be produced before court on 6th November 2008.
