New Law for Hawkers in Mumbai
Mumbai will soon have new laws for Hawkers. This note invites readers for perspectives and comments. Related Links Shrinking Spaces of Democracy Cities and cities Durga Puja as Protest: Small Traders in West Bengal New Policy Affects Independent Railway Caterers This is one of those Laws which will impact the city in far-reaching ways and can change the colour and character of the city, for the better or for worse, depending on the clauses of the Law. This is also a Law that is not reversible once passed. Therefore, all of us need to think about the quality of life and the needs of citizens of Mumbai, as pedestrians, consumers, and as those who ply trades. We must also think of related issues such as traffic, cleanliness, noise, safety, open spaces, vibrancy of a city, etc., and how these may be impacted positively or negatively by such a set of laws. BMC has invited citizen responses. Please do reply on a point-by-point basis to the Laws and send these to BMC by April 5th 2010 to the Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Hawker's Regulation), whose office is at Municipal Head Office, Annex Bldg., 6th Floor, Mahapalika Marg, Mumbai - 400001. (If you can email us your responses, do send these to Karmayog for circulation) Do also think of areas around your home, work place, or those that you pass through daily or on weekends, and try to visualise the positive and negative impacts of this Hawkers Policy, and write these down and circulate through Karmayog. This is important, as for most people, it is not easy to read a set of Laws and understand and visualise it's implications, for us today and forever in the future also. Do also share your experiences in other cities and countries. See the Karmayog section on hawkers / street vendors at www.karmayog.com/hawkers/hawkersindex.htm . The proposed laws are at www.karmayog.org/redirect/strred.asp?docId=29280 .
